It had been a relatively short drive in my rental BMW from Backnang to Schwäbisch Gmünd where I had spend all of my youth and early adulthood and I was looking forward to revisiting my old stomping grounds just one last time. I had been back before on several occasions but this time it was different. I was armed with a camera and was ready for my walk down memory lane.
As I drove into town I checked on some of the projects my dad had overseen during the 1960s and much to my chagrin found that most of them sat there in disrepair or even were boarded up. Now that was disappointing. I visited my old high school. It still looked like a prison. Built in the early 1900s it quite reflected the style of the period. I took some photos and then moved on. The next thing I found out was that the building where I had lived in last had made way for an Aldi supermarket, which I found disappointing. So I drove on. It took some timer to find a decent parking spot, paid for the metered parking and started to walk and to take photos. And yes, you can go back again. Businesses might have changed, pedestrians walk where once cars drove but the face of the city never really changed.
Come along for the walk with me and enjoy the sights.
