The many shades of grey. It's never just Black & White.
On a recent outing to Vancouver I passed by chance an art gallery, which hosted at the time an exhibition of wildlife photos, all of which were in black and white. This inspired me to look at my own photos and determine which ones would stand up to the rigours of conversion from colour photography to black and white.
This idea brought me back to my first experimentation with actual darkroom work. Suppose one would try to print colour photographs on b/w paper and further suppose one had filters, which, when used correctly, would enhance how the colours would be displayed on such paper. Or, as another alternative, would filter out colours completely for other cool effects.
Modern day photo-editing software makes it much easier to achieve the desired effects. What used to take hours of experimentation and printing onto the photo paper, the chemical baths and the drying of the photos just to find that the photo was over or under exposed and then make the adjustments, has been made much easier with a few mouse clicks for real time results.
This page contains some of my favourite photos converted to Black & White.
